My favorite genre is nonfiction that reads like fiction and that's what Killing Esther was for me. I couldn't put the book down. The reader is able to visualize all that is described. The fact that the text rambles enhances the story for me, as I think that's how many people think and speak. I grew up near the family and interacted with the members. This book filled in a lot of blanks for me. How brave of Susan to express her viewpoints for the world to see. I read some excerpts to my mother, who is now in assisted living, and she had tears in her eyes. Mom marveled at the descriptive prose.Product details

The story is very mixed.. You are constantly jumping in time, and I found it rather confusing. But the book was good, and a touching story.
I loved this book. It may have been one of the better memoirs I have read in awhile. I was so engaged in her life and her sisters death. I cried at points throughout. I myself had anorexia and bulimia for years and i am so glad that I didn't end up like Esther. Thank you Susan for telling this story and getting the word out about eating disorders.
I absolutely loved this book. For the first time in a long time, I couldn't put my down. The author is candid and courageous and I want to know MORE. Hopefully, there will be a sequel.
Susan Shepherd is a well written author who has produced a moving, tragic and compelling story that stays with the reader long after finishing the book. I was so involved in the author's life, I couldn't put the story down.
The author has such a gift for writing! Her descriptive words tell a story of a dysfunctional family and the devastating effects on the children. I highly recommend this great reading.
The author's style of writing was professional, and I would like to read more by her. That being said, the book often brought up issues that never were followed up on. The story itself was sad & touching, but I felt like there was a lot of detail in the beginning, and then sort of "wrap it up" The End. I can see where this was painful for the author to write, so perhaps that was a contributor to the flow of the story.
Reading Susan Shepherd's stark, brilliant memoir "Killing Esther", one can't but help feeling slightly voyeuristic, and very uncomfortable. Her narrative is well paced, and she easily moves from subject to subject as if she's lying on a psychiatrists couch, recalling her childhood. Her father, mother Esther (who in my opinion is the real Esther getting killed here), Sister Esther and brother all come alive as complex, three dimensional people, rather than the stereotypical cartoon characters that one finds in most books on this subject.
Her subject matter is not new, but her story is fresh and revealing. Rather than allowing her family's demons to possess her, or use their issues to lay the groundwork of blame for her own life, Ms. Shepherd (and the true hero of our story, her brother David), rise above the fray stronger, and the true strength of her spirit shines through the prose, which jumps from first person past to first person present with seamless ease. She, unlike most of society, learns from her experiences, no matter how terrible, rather than succumbing to them.
Brutal and refreshing in its honesty, "Killing Esther" is a must read for all, especially those looking for that rope to climb out of whatever hole that they're in.
